Mobile eSports Tournament Platform

Redesigning a Scalable eSports Tournament Ecosystem

Year :

2021

Industry :

Gaming

Client :

Sovtech

Project Duration :

12 weeks

Overview :

Miggster is a progressive web application (PWA) built for mobile and desktop, designed to facilitate competitive mobile gaming tournaments and prize-based competitions across the African market.

The project involved redesigning both the Admin platform and the Gamer-facing application, improving scalability, content management, monetisation capabilities, and user engagement.

Context & Opportunity :

Emerge Gaming aimed to strengthen its presence in the African eSports market through scalable tournament infrastructure and improved user acquisition tools.

While the existing user-facing app functioned adequately, the admin platform was outdated, restrictive, and inefficient, limiting the ability to scale games, manage tournaments, and adapt per region.

Opportunity:
Re-architect the platform experience to support rapid growth, better content control, advanced tournament mechanics, and compliant prize delivery, while maintaining a non-gambling perception within regulatory boundaries.

Platform Architecture :

This project required designing two interconnected systems:

Platform 1: Admin System

Internal dashboard for:

  • Game creation & management

  • Tournament configuration

  • Feature flagging by region

  • White-labelling controls

  • User management

  • Prize delivery & KYC validation

  • Advertising & third-party integrations

  • Admin-to-admin communications

Platform 2: Gamer Application

Consumer-facing PWA supporting:

  • Tournament participation

  • Player profiles & achievements

  • Subscription & billing management

  • Referrals & rewards

  • Chat & community interaction

  • Prize tracking and verification

Designing both layers required thinking beyond UI, considering system logic, permissions, scalability, and compliance.

Impact & Learnings :

  • Strengthened platform scalability by improving admin management capabilities

  • Improved user engagement by centralising profile and achievement systems

  • Balanced monetisation with responsible design principles

  • Designed within strict compliance constraints (KYC, POPIA, non-gambling positioning)

  • Gained experience building dual-system ecosystems (admin + consumer)

This project deepened my understanding of platform design at scale, particularly where monetisation, regulation, and engagement intersect.
